If you are interested in becoming a client, here is the general procedure:
- Download my Financial Services Guide, read it and keep a copy on file.
- If you are located in Perth, or plan on visiting Perth, email me and we'll set an appointment. Otherwise, if you are not in Perth download a copy of my client questionnaire, fill it in and return a copy to me. You can either fill in the questionnaire by editing the document in a word processor and then emailing me back the completed document, or by printing out a copy and filling it out by hand and then posting it to me. I have no preference on the method you choose to return me the questionnaire.
- Depending on where you are located we then discuss your situation and possible strategies, either in person or by email, phone and letter. I need to expand further on what you want to achieve and will ask further exploratory questions relating to the sort of advice you want.
- After strategies have been discussed in a general sense and we have agreed that the strategy I am proposing is something you are comfortable with, the next thing to discuss is the fee. Some strategies are relatively simple for me to execute, others require a lot of work ranging from calculations and research through to more mundane matters such as the amount of paperwork involved. My fee will reflect the amount of time and effort to be expended, not on more traditional benchmarks used by advisers such as, for example, how much money you are going to invest.
- Once the fee has been negotiated to the satisfaction of both parties and the nature of the service is understood by all, I will then begin work on the financial plan. The simplest plans take a few hours to finish, the most complex can take a number of weeks. If a deadline is looming (for example, the end of the grace period is coming up for the assessment of assets by Centrelink or if you need a superannuation account set up quickly) we may break up the plan into a few pieces, getting the urgent matters out of the way quickly so we can settle the rest when there is more time.
- When the plan is completed, I send a printed and bound copy of the plan plus any relevant quotes, brochures and prospectuses to you by post. (Or, in Perth, I hand deliver it). By this stage I've already spent most of the time I am going to spend and so my service fee is due on delivery of the plan, regardless of whether you proceed with all the recommendations. If any issues come up following the delivery of the completed plan, I will issue supplementary documents that will detail the changes that will be made.
- Once the plan is completed, including all accounts set up and monies placed, we will remain in contact for 12 months (email, phone, fax, letter), during which time basic maintenance of the portfolio and investment of new money will be executed free of charge. Either party may initiate contact, which means you can email me with a question any time you like and I will email you if something comes along needing your attention. After twelve months this account maintenance and ongoing advice will be performed for an agreed review fee. Significant changes that require a major restructuring of your portfolio are not included in this basic maintenance service and may require a new financial plan to be prepared for a price to be negotiated.
